Behind the Curtains
In this "Behind the curtains" series, we explore the unseen backstage scenes - the excitement and anguish of the performers, passionately photographed in “Betty’s street style”.
Set up on temporary stages, the Chinese Street Opera is a form of entertainment for many immigrants here in Singapore since 1800s. The opera is sung in Chinese dialects and is mainly performed and watched by elderly folks. Performers are mainly around 70 to 80 years old.
It is a fading tradition, but we are fortunate that there are a few passionate young people who try to keep this art alive.
