Subconscious
"Subconscious" is my long term visual theme and passion.
“Subconscious” captures the adrenaline and vibrancy of city life, juxtaposed with the unspoken loneliness, tension, and dilemmas lurking beneath the surface. Through introspective and abstract street photography, Betty delves into her soul and subconscious, presenting unposed and un-staged images taken in a single exposure with minimal to no editing.
"Subconscious" delves into Betty's personal journey, shaped by her upbringing in the heart of Singapore. Growing up amidst the vibrant pulse of the city, she has always sensed the interplay between its light and dark sides—forces that intertwine in ways that defy clear boundaries. In the dynamic, ever-changing urban landscape, these contrasting elements exist side by side, creating a complex and often mysterious rhythm that mirrors Betty's own experience of life, where moments of clarity and obscurity coexist without distinct separation.
After being diagnosed with cancer in 2021, Betty found solace in a simple yet profound ritual: walking the streets of her city almost every day. It was during these quiet walks, amid the hum of life around her, that she began to notice the small, often overlooked moments that others passed by. As she observed the world through her lens, capturing fleeting details, a revelation slowly unfurled. She realised that these images — of cracked pavements, forgotten corners, or moments of fleeting beauty — were not just snapshots of the world, but mirrors reflecting her own journey, her own fragility, and her unspoken resilience.
All my photos are captured unposed and un-staged on the streets, within single exposure and photo edits are mostly minimal/none. Most of my images are captured on the streets of my city and country, Singapore.
Here are some photos that were exhibited in my "Subconscious" solo exhibition in Singapore and Tokyo in 2024.
I also produce good new work almost everyday and regularly posts them on my instagram @betty_goh_photography. Please check them out over there.
